২০০৭ সালের নভেম্বরে ডঃ মীজান রহমানের সাথে আমার প্রথম দেখা। জেলহত্যা দিবস উদযাপন উপলক্ষে তাজউদ্দীন আহমদ ফাউন্ডেশনের আমন্ত্রণে মন্ট্রিয়লে আগমন এবং সেখানেই পরিচয় ছোটখাট অবয়বের এই বিশাল মাপের মানুষটির সাথে। তাঁর বিশালত্ব এখানেই যে তিনি তাঁর বুদ্ধিবৃত্তির চর্চায়
সদা নিমগ্ন থেকেছেন সত্য ও সুন্দরকে ধারনের জন্যে। শিক্ষা–দীক্ষা এবং লেখনীর জগতে
তিনি ব্যাপক খ্যাতি লাভ করেছেন এবং পদ-পদবীতেও তিনি উচ্চে আসীন হয়েছেন। কিন্তু সে সবেরও অনেক শীর্ষে তাঁর অবস্থান ঐ সত্য ও
সুন্দরের সাধনার এক অগ্রগামী পথযাত্রী রুপে। বর্তমান বিশ্বে বুদ্ধির ব্যাপ্তি
সম্পন্ন বুদ্ধিজীবির অভাব নেই; অভাব রয়েছে সততালব্ধ ও স্বাধীন চিন্তাসম্পন্ন সত্য
সন্ধানীর। অভাব রয়েছে ঘুণে ধরা জরাজীর্ণ চিন্তায়, সংলাপে, ও পরিবেশে সুন্দরের বীজ
বপনের প্রত্যয়শীল ব্রতচারী মানুষের। আর এখানেই মীজান রহমান এক ব্যাতিক্রমধর্মী
আলোকিত ব্যক্তিত্ব। আচরণে বিনয়ী। জীবনযাপনে অনাড়ম্বর। ফলবাহী বৃক্ষ মাটির কাছে
নত হয়ে পূর্ণতা পায় এমনি ব্যক্তিত্ব। তার সাথে আলাপের সূচনায় ডঃ মীজান হতে অনায়াসে চাচা সম্বোধন শুরু হোল। চাচা নিজ হাতে বানান রসগোল্লা খাওয়ালেন এবং আমি
তারিয়ে তারিয়ে সেই অতুলনীয় মিষ্টান্নের স্বাদ উপভোগ করলাম তাঁরই স্নেহধন্য হয়ে।
ওয়াশিংটনে যখন বেড়াতে এলেন তাঁকে নিয়ে শত বার দেখা স্মিথসোনিয়ান মিউজিয়াম পাড়ার
প্রিয় স্থানগুলি আবারো ঘুরে দেখলাম। ন্যাশনাল মিউজিয়াম অফ আর্টস ভবনে, থমাস কোলের
হৃদয় আলোড়িত, গভীর দর্শন সমৃদ্ধ চিত্রকলা “ভয়েজ অফ লাইফ”, ন্যাচারাল হিস্ট্রি
মিউজিয়ামের প্রত্নতত্ত্ব, নীলাভ হোপ ডায়মন্ডের জন্ম কথা, এয়ার অ্যান্ড স্পেস
মিউজিয়ামে চাঁদের মাটিকে দেখা ও স্পর্শ করা হোল যেন নতুন করে; নতুনভাবে। একাত্ম
হয়ে দেখায় অতি পুরাতনও কেমন ঝকঝকে নতুন হয়ে ওঠে। মীজান চাচা, গতবছরের সেপ্টেম্বরে
কোস্টারিকায় আমার কাছে বেড়াতে এলেন। প্রাকৃতিক সৌন্দর্যের লীলাভূমি এই দেশটিকে
পর্যবেক্ষণ করলেন বিজ্ঞানীর বিশ্লেষক চোখ ও কবিতার অন্তর দিয়ে। “লা পাস”-শান্তি
পার্কে হামিং বার্ড, টুকান, ম্যাকাও পাখির জমকাল উপস্থিতি, আকাশ ছোঁয়া ঘন সবুজ
পাহাড় হতে নির্গত রুপালী ঝরনার স্রোত ধারা, পোয়াজ আগ্নেয় গিরির ধূমায়িত গহ্বর, কফি
বাগান ছাওয়া টুকটুকে লাল কফি বীনের সমারোহ তিনি দেখলেন ও মনে ধারন করলেন কি পরম
আগ্রহ সহকারে। আমার আম্মা বলতেন যে বয়সটা একটা ইলিউশন –মরীচিকা মাত্র। নবীন বয়সেও
একজন অতি দ্রুত বার্ধক্যে পৌঁছে যেতে পারে জীবন ও পরিবেশ সম্পর্কে তার অনাগ্রহতার কারণে। আবার একজন সংখ্যাভারে প্রবীন হয়েও তারুণ্যের ঝলমলে আলোয় দীপ্তিমান হয়ে ওঠেন
জীবন,পরিবেশ, সমাজ ও প্রকৃতিকে কে জানার বিপুল আগ্রহ হতে। ঐ ধরনের আগ্রহ থেকেই তো
সৃষ্টি হয় নতুন দর্শন ও বিবর্তিত চিন্তার শতদল।
মীজান চাচার একাশিতম জন্মদিনটি (১৬ সেপ্টেম্বর, ২০১৩) উদযাপিত হয় কোস্টারিকায়।
সেটি আমার পরম সৌভাগ্যও বটে। সারা জীবনের অভ্যাস মত সেদিনও তিনি পাখি ডাকা ভোরে
উঠেছেন। নোট খাতা ভরে লিখে চলেছেন তাঁর নতুন দেশ ভ্রমণের অভিজ্ঞতা। খুব ডিসিপ্লিনড
মানুষ তিনি। বন্ধু আমিনা ও সোফিয়াকে নিয়ে তাঁর সারপ্রাইজ বার্থডে উদযাপনের আগে সেদিন
তাকে নিয়ে বেড়াতে গিয়েছিলাম ন্যাশনাল থিয়েটারে। কফি রপ্তানীর অর্থে ১৮৯৭ সালে রাজধানী
স্যান হোসেতে প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয় এই মনমুগ্ধকর শিল্পকলা থিয়েটার ভবনটি। চাচা খুঁটিয়ে
খুঁটিয়ে দেখছেন তার স্থাপত্য, কারুকাজ করা দেয়াল, সিলিং, মঞ্চের ডিজাইন। একতলা ঘুরে
সোনালী ঝাড়বাতিতে ঘেরা দোতালার বড় হলরুমটিতে এসে তিনি থামলেন। পরিষ্কার পরিচ্ছনতায়
ব্যস্ত এক কর্মচারীর কাজ তিনি দেখলেন মনোযোগ সহকারে। একনিবিষ্টভাবে কর্মচারীটি কাজ
করে চলেছে। নকশা কাটা লাল, সবুজ, বাদামী, হলুদ কাঠের ফ্লোরের কোনা এবং আসবাব
পত্রের নীচে লুকানো সামান্য ধূলাটিও তার চোখ এড়াচ্ছেনা। চাচা বললেন “একটি জাতি
কতখানি উন্নত তা শুধু বড় বিষয় নয় ছোটখাট ঘটনা থেকেও বোঝা সম্ভব। কাজ তা যত ছোটই
মনে হোক না কেন তার প্রতি আন্তরিকতাই একটি জাতিকে সভ্য জাতিতে পরিনত করে”। এই হোল
মীজান চাচা যিনি অনুসন্ধানী দৃষ্টি দিয়ে পর্যবেক্ষণ করেন সমাজের অনু পরমানুসম গতিধারাকে।
এ বছরের জুন মাসে্র শুরুতে চাচার আমন্ত্রণে আমার স্বামী
আমর (ডঃ আমর খাইরি আব্দাল্লা) সহ ওনার অটোয়ার বাড়িতে বেড়াতে গেলাম। তিনি নিজ হাতে খিচুড়ি,
মাছ, মুরগী, সবজিসহ নানা উপাদেয় পদ রান্না করে আমাদের তাক লাগিয়ে দিলেন ও মুগ্ধ
করলেন। ওনার প্রিয়তমা স্ত্রী প্রয়াত পারুল রহমান, দুই কৃতি পুত্র বাবু ও রাজার বড়
হওয়া, কর্মব্যাস্ত জীবনের বহু স্মৃতি বিজড়িত এই বাড়িটি ছেড়ে শীঘ্রই তিনি উঠে যাবেন
এপার্টমেন্টে। শান্ত-স্নিগ্ধ বাড়িটির ফ্যামিলি রুমের বড় জানালা দিয়ে বাইরে তখন দেখা
যায় cardinal, blue jay ও বিভিন্ন পাখীদের আনাগোনা। আমি জানালার সামনে দাঁড়িয়ে দেখতে থাকি বাইরের
বিশালকায় গাছের পাতার ফাঁকে লাল, নীল, সবুজ ডানার সমারোহ, বর্ণালি পাখিদের আনন্দময়
আলাপচারিতা। ভেতরে কিচেনের টেবিলের পাশে বসে আমর ও চাচা আলাপে মগ্ন। গণিতের যশস্বী
অধ্যাপক চাচা মত বিনিময় করছেন শান্তি ও সংঘর্ষ শিক্ষার অধ্যাপক আমরের সাথে। গনিত,
ফিবুনাচি সংখ্যা তত্ত্ব ও শূন্যর মূল্য হতে, যুদ্ধ বিধ্বস্ত আফ্রিকার রোআণ্ডা,
বুরুন্দিতে ও বাংলাদেশের প্রত্যন্ত অঞ্চলে
শান্তি শিক্ষার কার্যক্রম ও অভিজ্ঞতার মত বিনিময়
হচ্ছে। যেন বাইরে ভেতরে চলছে একই সুরালাপ।
আজকের 'কেউ কথা রাখেনি'র যুগে চাচা এক বিরল মানুষ যার
ওপরে নির্ভর করা যায়। তাজউদ্দীন আহমদের ওপরে তাঁর তিন সহকর্মীর সাক্ষাৎকার
ইংরেজীতে অনুবাদের অনুরোধ যখন জানাই, তিনি
বললেন নির্ধারিত সময়ের মধ্যে অনুবাদ করে দিতে যথা সাধ্য চেষ্টা করবেন। আমি অবাক
করা খুশীতে আপ্লুত হই যখন দেখি যে তিনটি নয়, তিনি নির্ধারিত সময়ের আগেই চারটি বিশাল
অনুবাদ আমাকে করে দিয়েছেন। আর সে কী প্রাঞ্জল মন-কাড়া অনুবাদ!

আমাকে শুধু প্রাণঢালা অভিনন্দনই জানান নি আমার পাশেও এসে দাঁড়ালেন এক স্নেহময়
অভিভাবকের মতই পরম আন্তরিকতা নিয়ে। বইকে
কেন্দ্র করে লিখলেন অসামান্য কিছু কথা। বৃষ্টির মধ্যে দুঘণ্টা পথ ড্রাইভ করে অটোয়া
হতে মন্ট্রিয়লে এলেন ম্যাকগিল ইউনিভার্সিটিতে ঐ বইয়ের ওপর আলোচনা সভায় যোগ দিতে। এতটুকু যেন ক্লান্তি নেই। ব্যক্তিগত
কোন অসুবিধা বা কষ্ট সম্পর্কে সহজে বলবেন না। করবেন না অনুযোগ। কিন্তু অন্যের
কষ্টে তিনি নিজে হবেন বিচলিত। উদ্বিগ্ন। এই হলেন ডঃ মীজান রহমান, আমার মীজান চাচা;
এক স্মরণীয়, বরণীয় ও অনুকরণীয় ব্যক্তিত্ব। নির্ভেজাল খাঁটি মানুষ।*

Thanks a lot for correcting the spelling mistakes the avro font don't allow sometime the correct Bangla spelling.
I truly appreciate the time you have given to fine tune the tribute.
I will be flying tomorrow to Africa and may not have regular internet access but when I do I will surely check on for updates on chacha.
I do feel a big vacuum in my heart with his departure. You archive certainly provides an outlet to share our deepest feeling for him.

I wrote this tribute to Mizan Chacha at the request of Tajul Muhammed bhai. He was planning to publish a commemorative to celebrate his 83rd birthday.
I am deeply saddened that he departed before we could offer him our tributes of love and gratitude.
However I am certain that our message will transcend any boundary and certainly reach him.

Profound Thanks for creating an archive to celebrate the larger than life memories of Dr.Mizan Rahman . I had the good fortune of addressing him as Chacha. He will be greatly missed yet live in our collective memories as a man of great integrity, affection, compassion and intellect.
I will forever cherish the unforgettable times we spent in beautiful Costa Rica on which he penned an impressive article.
I have attached two of his articles to add to the archive; one he wrote on his Costa Rica trip in September 2013 including our celebration of his 81st birthday on September 16. The second article sprang from the conversation he had with my husband Amr on his experiences working with people with very limited resources and the resilience despite the limitations.
Mizan Chacha will be greatly missed on many levels.
May the Compassionate Creator rest his soul in eternal peace.
